The Ohio River is one of the great backdrops for a fireworks display, and the Fourth of July over Cincinnati reminds you why. I positioned myself to frame the skyline across the water with the Great American Ballpark visible on the left and the city's towers rising behind it, then waited for the display to build to its peak. When the sky filled, the river caught it all — every burst had a twin below, wavering in the current.
What separates a good fireworks photograph from a great one is usually the city behind the display. Cincinnati's skyline has enough character to hold its own against the light show above it — the distinct profiles of its buildings, the curve of the riverfront, the Kentucky hills in the far distance. Star Spangled Cincinnati is the kind of image the city deserves: full of light, full of pride, the river doing its part to make everything twice as good.
