Maui earns its reputation every evening. The island sits at a latitude that produces sunsets over the Pacific with a consistency and quality that travelers come from everywhere to witness, and the sweet smell of plumeria in the air while the sky does its work is a combination that stays with you long after you've left. I've photographed a lot of sunsets. Very few places frame them the way Maui does.
The last light of the day over the Pacific from Maui has a warmth and depth that comes from the distance the light has traveled and the particular quality of the tropical atmosphere. The ocean holds the colors long after the sun has dropped, and the silhouettes of the island's landscape against the sky give the scene a layered quality that open-ocean sunsets don't have. Paradise is a word that gets overused. Here it earns its keep.
