Folley Morning

Photographing piers requires patience and timing. I arrived well before sunrise, setting up my tripod in the wet sand as the first hint of light appeared on the horizon. The pier stretched into the ocean, its pilings creating a rhythmic pattern that would anchor the composition. My goal was to use a long exposure to transform the chaotic motion of waves into something smooth and ethereal.

As the shutter stayed open, the waves became mist. Each surge of water left its trace, overlapping with the next to create patterns that feel almost painted. The pier remained sharp against this softness, a man-made structure standing firm against the ocean's constant motion. The morning sky added its own gradient—soft blues and creams that complemented the turquoise of the water without competing for attention.

What I love about long exposure seascapes is the way they reveal time itself. Each photograph compresses minutes into a single frame, showing not a moment but a span—the accumulation of waves, the progression of light, the relationship between solid structure and fluid motion. The pier has stood here for decades, waves breaking against its pilings millions of times. This image captures just a few minutes of that endless interaction, yet it somehow conveys the timeless quality of the scene.
