Devil's Cauldron

There are evenings that feel like the earth is showing off, when every element conspires to produce something so beyond ordinary that the only honest response is to stand there and let it happen. Devil's Cauldron was one of those evenings. I arrived at the beach expecting a decent sunset. What I got was a sky on fire from horizon to horizon—deep red giving way to orange, orange bleeding into every cloud above in colors that belonged more to a forge than to a sky. And beneath all of it, the waves came in turquoise and cold against the sand.

I have photographed coastlines on five continents and in every condition of light. I have never seen anything quite like this. The relationship between the red sky and the turquoise water should not have worked—they are opposing forces in the color spectrum—and yet in that moment, they were in perfect, violent harmony. The beach itself had gone gray, acting as a neutral stage for the confrontation happening above and below it.

I shot quickly, knowing this would not hold. Moments this intense are measured in seconds, not minutes. What I captured was the peak of it—the precise second when the color reached its maximum, when the waves and the sky and the sand were all at their most themselves. On a large-format metal print, Devil's Cauldron does not suggest fire. It delivers it. This is a piece that commands a wall the way the original scene commanded that beach.
