From altitude, a beach becomes something else entirely. I was above a stretch of Caribbean coastline — the water impossibly clear, the umbrellas lined up in neat rows on the sand — when I realized the scene was more graphic than photographic. The geometry of it: the clean edge where the beach meets the wave line, the repeating shapes of the cabanas casting short shadows in the midday sun, the color of the water deepening as it moved away from shore.
What strikes me most about aerial beach photography is how it reduces a complicated, crowded place to its essential elements — color, line, and texture. The turquoise grades slowly into deeper blue as the water deepens. The sand holds the memory of every wave that touched it. From down there, it's just a beautiful beach. From up here, it's a composition.
