Azalea Corridor

There was a moment, standing at the entrance to this path, when I wasn't sure whether to walk through it or simply stop and photograph it from where I stood. The azaleas on both sides had reached the outer edge of the path and were leaning toward each other, their branches heavy with bloom, the flowers so close to the gravel beneath them that the space between them felt intimate rather than spacious. The path itself had become secondary to the corridor of color that lined it.

I chose to stop. The light was coming softly from above—overcast enough to eliminate harsh shadows, bright enough to render every petal in full—and the perspective through the azaleas created a natural depth that led the eye through the frame without forcing it. The pink and magenta of the flowers dominated, but behind and above them, the suggestion of trees and moss gave the image the context it needed: this was a garden with roots, a place that had been cultivated with care over a very long time.

This walkway changes with the season, but there are only a few days each spring when the bloom is this complete—when every shrub is fully open and the corridor holds its color from one end to the other without a gap. I have learned to wait for those days. They do not announce themselves in advance. They simply arrive, briefly and without warning, and they ask you to be paying attention. This morning, I was.
