When three humpbacks surface together, the water changes before you can identify what's causing it. I was on a whale watch boat off the coast of Maui when the guide said quietly, "watch the water to the left." Within seconds, one fluke rose cleanly out of the channel — deliberate, unhurried, that distinct notched edge catching the midday light — while two of the others were blowing and churning the surface around it.
The Maui coastline makes these images. Haleakalā rises behind the channel, giving context and scale to encounters that would otherwise feel disconnected from place. I love the way this photograph shows three different moments simultaneously — the arching fluke at full height, the blow of one surfacing, the splash of another diving. Three animals, three behaviors, one frame. That's the gift of patience on the water.
