Sunrise Over Sankaty
Each piece is captured in a rare moment where light, time, and place come together.
I arrived before first light and positioned myself overlooking Sankaty Golf Club with the lighthouse in view in the distance waiting for first light. The clouds were building in a way that suggested the sunrise might be exceptional, and I wanted to be ready when it happened.
When the light began, it escalated quickly. The sky transitioned from blue to pink to layers of intense coral, purple, and gold - those clouds catching fire from the rising sun and creating drama overhead while the landscape below took on warm tones. The lighthouse stood silhouetted against this developing spectacle, its distinctive banded pattern visible, and the golf course stretched out in the foreground with the old rail fence creating leading lines.
I composed to balance all the elements - the fence in the immediate foreground providing depth and context, the golf course and lighthouse in the middle distance, and that spectacular sky filling the upper two-thirds of the frame. The color palette ranged from the warm greens and golds of the landscape to the cool blues and explosive warm tones of the clouds.
What made this moment work was how complete it felt. The iconic Nantucket lighthouse, the classic coastal golf course, the weathered fence, and that sky doing exactly what you hope for when you commit to getting up so early. These are the moments that make the waiting worthwhile—when landscape, architecture, and atmospheric conditions converge to create something that exists briefly and then transforms into something else or disappears altogether.
