Stone Cathedral

Some scenes demand to be seen in black and white. When I arrived at this waterfall, the textures immediately caught my attention—the horizontal striations in the rock face, the vertical flow of water, the rough scatter of boulders below. Color would have been a distraction. What mattered was form, contrast, and the interplay of solid and liquid.

I set up for a long exposure, letting the water blur into soft veils while the rock remained sharp and detailed. The geology here tells a story millions of years old—each layer representing an epoch, each crack and fissure evidence of forces that shaped these mountains. The waterfall itself is a recent phenomenon in geological time, yet it's already carved its path deep into the stone, proving that persistence overcomes even the hardest obstacles.

Working in monochrome forces you to see differently. Without the distraction of color, your eye goes to texture, shape, and tonal variation. The dark rock emphasizes the brightness of the falling water. The contrast between the razor-sharp stone and the ethereal flow of water creates tension—one permanent, one constantly changing, yet both essential to the composition.
