Spring Bridge

The bridge has been in this garden long enough that the wisteria has decided it belongs to it now. The purple clusters hang from above the left side of the frame in long, fragrant trails, and on the right, the azaleas have opened in a pink so vivid it almost hums. Below, the bridge's reflection in the black water of the lagoon is nearly perfect—curved and white and still, repeating everything above it in a version that is only slightly softer, only slightly less defined.

This is the frame that the garden offers most willingly in spring, and I have returned to it across multiple seasons because it is never the same twice. The wisteria's position changes. The azaleas shift in color between years. The reflection depends entirely on the stillness of the water and the angle of the morning light. On this morning, all of it aligned: the bridge was well-lit, the water was still, the wisteria was at full bloom, and the azaleas on the right were exactly at peak.

I made the photograph when the light was just right—low enough to give the bridge its warmth, diffuse enough to hold the color of the flowers without losing it to glare. The result is an image that feels composed but isn't—that looks like something someone designed when in fact it is simply what this garden does every spring, for anyone patient enough to arrive at the right hour and stay until the scene is ready. Printed at scale, the reflection, the wisteria, and the bloom fill the frame with the full presence of a Lowcountry spring.
