Mirror Image

Harbour Town's lighthouse is unlike any other on the East Coast—playful where others are austere, colorful where they're traditional. I arrived as the sun was setting, knowing this transitional light would be perfect for capturing both the lighthouse's distinctive stripes and the warm glow of the marina coming to life for the evening.

The timing had to be precise. Too early and the artificial lights wouldn't show; too late and the sky would lose its color. I set up to include both the lighthouse and its reflection, waiting for the water to calm enough to create that mirror effect. When it came together, the scene was almost surreal—the pink and orange sky, the illuminated lighthouse beacon beginning to glow, the yachts reflecting their warm cabin lights, all doubled in the still water below.

What makes this location special is how it blends natural beauty with human activity. The lighthouse stands as both functional beacon and beloved landmark, the marina bustles with life while maintaining an elegant atmosphere, and the surrounding marsh and water create a setting that's quintessentially Low Country. As twilight deepened, I watched people gather at the waterfront restaurants, boats returning to their slips, the scene transforming from day to night in that magical half-hour when both exist simultaneously.
