Grateful Sunrise

I was standing near Brant Point Lighthouse as the sun started to rise over Nantucket Harbor, expecting the usual early light — pleasant, manageable, something I'd seen before. What happened instead was an eruption of color that caught me completely off guard. The sky went from pale to vivid in what felt like seconds, the colors building on each other in a way that reminded me, of all things, of the tie-dye shirts I used to make in college. Bold, joyful, and completely unplanned.
That connection arrived unexpectedly and stayed with me through the entire shoot. I was photographing one of Nantucket's most iconic landmarks and suddenly I was also remembering creativity and freedom and a different version of myself. I let the lighthouse anchor the composition and let the color do everything else. Grateful Sunrise is exactly what the title says — a photograph I'm grateful to have made, at a place I'm grateful to keep returning to.
