8th North on this stormy morning is one of my favorites. I made this image on a cool, stormy morning when the color palette had already gone gray, and converted fully to sepia to let the tonal range do the work. The result is a composition that feels almost like a charcoal drawing — wind-blown grasses in the foreground, a clean bunker tucked into the approach, pines standing at the back. The composition leans harder into the texture of the native grasses that line this hole. I found a vantage with a thick bunch of wind-swept ornamental grass in the foreground, positioned it low in the frame, and let it dominate the composition. The bunker in the middle distance became a quiet anchor; the pines on the back became a soft band of dark tone.

What the sepia treatment does best is unify. On a color day, the greens, sands, and trees each claim their own part of the frame. Rendered in warm monochrome, every element contributes to a single tonal composition, and the eye is free to travel across the image without getting hung up on hue.

These are photographs that reward slow looking. No punch, no drama — just the quiet pleasure of a golf hole honestly seen.
