7 North Sunrise

I'd returned to the seventh hole for sunrise, knowing the pond fronting this section of the course might create reflection opportunities if conditions were right. When I arrived in predawn darkness, the water was completely still—that perfect mirror surface that only happens in morning calm before wind or activity disturbs it.
As sunrise developed, the sky put on a show. The color built gradually - first hints of pink, then deeper coral and orange where the sun was rising, transitioning to blue overhead. Clouds added texture and interest, creating layers and patterns that would reflect in the still water below. The tree line stood silhouetted against this developing warmth, and the strategic elements of the hole - bunkers, fairway, native grasses - created foreground interest.
What made this image work was the complete reflection. The sky, the trees, the landscape - everything doubled in the mirror-calm water, creating perfect symmetry. The color palette ranged from cool blue overhead through pink and coral to warm gold at the horizon, and all of it repeated in the water's surface. The immediate foreground showed the manicured edge of the pond, grounding the composition in the reality of a golf course while the reflection created something more abstract and painterly.
I positioned myself to emphasize this mirroring, giving the reflection equal weight with the actual landscape. The light was shifting constantly as the sun rose, the intensity building and the color spreading. I worked through the progression, watching the transformation, knowing these conditions - perfect stillness, dramatic color, complete reflection - only align occasionally and briefly.
What I wanted to capture was Berkeley Hall's North Course at its most ethereal - when water acts as mirror, when sky performs its daily transformation, when the landscape doubles itself and creates beauty that transcends the functional purpose of a golf hole and becomes something worth experiencing purely for its aesthetic impact.
